This girl popped up in my sketchbook a few days ago and ever since, I've been itching to put some color on here. A girl knight, you say? Yeah, that's right! I'd say this one was born from my subconscious mind, as I've been rereading the Game of Thrones series and Brienne of Tarth was probably tucked away in the back of my mind. So maybe this is a little inspired by her, but it's mostly inspired by the idea of exploring more out-of-the-box characters in my illustrations. My girl characters don't have to be princesses and ballerinas and perfect examples of girliness, although I doubt I'll leave that totally by the wayside, because I still love it too. But this year is all about playing around with mediums and styles!
And again here, like last week's farm illustration, I'm focusing on simpler shapes, less line, and not overworking an illustration. For me, it's been a much more thoughtful process, as I consider each mark I make on the piece. Simplicity is tricky, folks! But I like where this is going and am immersing myself in the process.
So what do you think? More illustrations of characters outside of the typical boy and girl roles that we're always seeing? I think yes!
